Made in Australia: What It Means for Our Oat 10L Cat Litter

Made in Australia: What It Means for Our Oat 10L Cat Litter

"Australian made" gets printed on a lot of pet products, but it doesn't always mean the same thing. Before we tell you why it matters, here's the honest version of our own story: of our four cat litter formulas, one is manufactured right here in Australia — our Oat 10L range. The others are made overseas to the same quality standards, but they don't carry that label, because they shouldn't. Here's what the distinction actually means, and why it's worth checking on any brand, not just ours.

It starts with biosecurity

Australia has some of the strictest biosecurity controls in the world — for good reason. Imported agricultural and plant-based products can carry risks that simply don't apply to litter made domestically from locally sourced material. Litter manufactured in Australia, from Australian inputs, in an Australian facility, avoids the biosecurity uncertainty that comes with importing raw plant material or finished product across borders. For something your cat spends hours a day in close contact with, that's not a small detail.

Where our Oat 10L range fits

We manufacture Oat 10L — made from Australian oat husk, oat bran and wheat starch — at our own facility in Penrith, NSW. It's the product in our range that's genuinely made locally, from local inputs, start to finish.

Our Original, Plus and Auto formulas are a different story: they're made from pea fibre sourced and processed overseas, manufactured to the same quality standards we hold ourselves to, but they aren't made in Australia and we don't label them that way. If local manufacturing matters to you specifically, Oat 10L is the formula in our range that delivers it.

Quality control you can actually trace

When a product is made locally, the supply chain is short enough to inspect. For Oat 10L, that means raw material sourcing, production and packaging all happen under one roof at Penrith, rather than being handed off between multiple international parties. If something needs to be corrected, it can be corrected at the source.

Freshness and consistency

Imported litter often spends weeks at sea and in warehousing before it reaches an Australian shelf. Oat 10L travels a fraction of that distance from Penrith to your door, which means less time in transit and less variability between shipments.

What "Australian Made" actually certifies

Not every bag that mentions Australia is independently verified. Look for the official Australian Made (AM) / Australian Made and Owned (AMO) certification — a registered logo that can only be used by products meeting audited local content and manufacturing requirements, not a marketing claim a brand can print on its own authority. When you see the certified logo on a product, it means the claim has been checked, not just stated.

Supporting local jobs and local growers

Buying Oat 10L supports Australian manufacturing jobs at our Penrith facility, and the oat husk and bran it's made from are sourced domestically, supporting local growers too. That's a genuine, specific claim about this one formula — not a general statement about the whole range.

How to check before you buy

Next time you're comparing cat litter brands — ours included — it's worth asking three quick questions:

  1. Is it certified, or just claimed? Look for the registered Australian Made logo, not just the word "Australian" on the packaging.
  2. Is it manufactured here, or just packaged here? Some products are imported in bulk and only bagged locally — that's not the same as local manufacturing.
  3. Does the claim cover the specific product, or just the brand? A brand can be Australian-owned while individual products in its range are made overseas — ask which formula you're actually looking at.

"Made in Australia" isn't a nostalgia play — it's a proxy for tighter biosecurity, a traceable supply chain and a claim worth checking rather than taking on faith. In our own range, Oat 10L is the one we can point to a local factory and local ingredients for.
